It seems strange, but many people do not have full copies of their insurance policies (including all of the endorsements) and of the people who do have full copies very few actually read the policies. It is possible and even likely that consumers do not have the coverage that they believe they do. Insurance policies often have exclusions that limit the coverage you thought you had to obscure circumstances that very rarely actually happen to people. The time a claim is reported is not the time you want to find out your not covered for something. Read your policy, ask your agent questions and if the insurance company cannot provide you with the coverage you want then look around to other companies. This is some good insurance advice! My husband has insurance through his work, but they were going to charge $600 more a month to add me when I usually go to the doctor once a year (physical). This was outrageous, so shopped around the web and found something more realistic for myself. I think if other healthy individuals get proactive about their insurance they can find better deals than what is right in front of them.

As you mention, it seems to me that the biggest untold story is how not only are insurance rates going up, but the value is going down.

I used to get so exited when I read about amazing medical breakthrough. Now I just think, oh my insurance won’t cover that.

And of course there is the old standby argument against single payer health care “You won’t get to choose your doctor.” But if you are in a cheap HMO, guess what? You don’t get to pick your doctor, AND you are paying a fortune.
